Big changes in latest Perth radio ratings survey

The sixth ratings survey for the year came out recently, and it revealed the Mix 94.5 breakfast crew has managed to claw its way back to the top of the coveted Perth breakfast slot. The Mix team were up 1.9 per cent to claim a 15 per cent share of the market overall. This pushed Nova 937’s breakfast team back into second position, with 12.3 per cent.

The ABC is not far behind on 11.8 per cent after a moderate fall of 0.2 per cent, but bear in mind the ABC’s former King of Radio the late Eoin Cameron reigned supreme in this slot for many, many surveys after he managed to wrestle top spot from 94.5. After Eoin’s retirement because of ill health, the ABC breakfast mantle was temporarily handed over to James Lush, who somehow managed to juggle running his own business with the unforgiving hours of breakfast radio.

A few others have also been sitting in the breakfast chair, including afternoon host Gillian O’Shaughnessy (who’s not a fan of early mornings) and the newsroom’s Michaela Carr. But this week has seen newcomer to ABC Peter Bell step into the studio. The ABC will be hoping he can regain the breakfast slot crown, but judging by his lackluster ratings at his previous station 6PR, he may have a job ahead of him. He certainly has some big shoes to fill, and it can take a while to find your own voice when you’re following in the footsteps of a legend.

Aside from the breakfast slot, in the morning show talkback battle both 6PR and ABC lost ground in Survey 6. Geoff Hutchison managed to keep his losses to a minimum, down 0.3 per cent to be at 9.3 per cent, while Gary Adshead’s loss was a little more substantial, down 1.7 per cent to 6 per cent of the audience.

Overall, Mix 94.5 remains Perth’s top rating station across all age groups, and gained another 1.2 per cent in this survey to be sitting at 16.4 per cent. Nova is somewhat of a distant second at 11.2 per cent, with only the slimmest of leads over Hit 92.9, which is on 11.1 per cent.

Survey 7 should be interesting!
