New MLA Simon Millman ready to work for the people of Mt Lawley

In his career as an accomplished lawyer, New Mt Lawley MP Simon Millman fought for workers’ compensation, personal injury, discrimination and asbestos-related disease cases. And that passion for people will continue, with his first priority as a politician to “bring local businesses together to discuss how they can benefit from WA Labor’s Plan for Jobs”.

With the WAEC having declared the result, Simon Millman defeated outgoing Liberal MLA Michael Sutherland by securing 54 per cent of the two party preferred vote. This represents a swing of 12.9 per cent to WA Labor.

A graduate of the University of Western Australia, Mr Millman worked for law firm Slater & Gordon for 12 years as a lawyer and practice group leader, handling cases from unfair dismissals in the Fair Work Commission to complex industrial litigation and appeals in the Federal Court.

He has extensive experience in personal injury law, having acted for hundreds of workers and their families in relation to workers’ compensation and asbestos-related disease claims.

Mr Millman is committed to social justice and has worked in areas including native title, administrative law and has offered his time, volunteering at a number of local community legal centres.

Passionate about his local area, he has lived in the Mt Lawley electorate for many years. He and his wife, Tara, were married at a local church and his two young boys were born at the local hospital.

Mr Millman said “living locally, my energy and enthusiasm for our community’s interests and priorities” had set him ahead of other candidates to win the seat of Mt Lawley.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts with honours from the University of WA and has been admitted to the High Court of Australia and Supreme Court of WA.
